Flintnail the Mason

By Ian Thomson and Greg Stafford.
Additional ideas by Wesley Quadros.
Based on material by Greg Stafford and Steve Perrin.

Hardeye Flintnail was an unusual Mostali, and did not follow his kin when they withdrew from contact with the other races. He came to Dragon Pass during the time of the Empire of the Wyrm's Friends, leading a large group of renegade dwarves of differing origins who had chosen him as their leader and protector. Flintnail became a friend of Pavis, and the two of them devised the project for a city that would combine the best parts of the ways of both the Grower and the Maker. Flintnail and his dwarf followers were responsible for much of the planning and labouring that created the magnificent new city alongside the River of Cradles.

In order to protect his people and their descendents, Flintnail quested into the dangers of the Green Age, seeking answers and powers. Flintnail was given aid by the local Earth Tribe and forged a new identity for his people. After failing to return from one of his journeys, the son he had created with one of Pavis' daughters sought information on his father by praying to Pavis. To his great surprise he found that rather than Pavis he was answered by Flintnail. Flintnail instructed him on his proper work, thus beginning the cult.

The followers of Flintnail use misapplied theistic practices to worship a sorcerous entity (see Hero Wars). As such, worshippers must spend double HP to learn or increase his City Builder affinity and its feats.

Entry Requirements: Every Pavic dwarf may automatically become an initiate of Flintnail on reaching maturity. They do not have to also be initiates of Pavis the Founder, but many choose to be. Humans are only accepted into the worship of Flintnail if they are promising trainees in the crafts at which the dwarves excel, and they must already also be initiates of Pavis the Founder.
Physical Abilities: Close Combat (Hammer and Shield Fighting), Masonry, Smith
Mental Abilities: Dwarf Architectural Lore, Mythology of Flintnail.
Virtues: Fastidious, Hard Working, Reserved.
Affinity: City Builder (Bind Stone, Cut and Dress Stone, Hold Stone, Shape Metal, Shift Stonework).
Secret: Work Stone of the Faceless Statue (Since the Flintnail cult uses misapplied worship, it cannot access a true magical secret. However, the cult knows the secret of how to work the stone that came from the Faceless Statue, and they will teach this physical ability to members once they have proven their loyalty and skill. (It costs normal HP to learn and increase.) Other artisans without this special knowledge of the tools and knack of working the magical stone cannot do more than destroy the stone when working it.)
Worshippers: Specialist Pavic artisans, especially dwarves.
Other Side: Flintnail welcomes all loyal worshippers as assistants in his workshop that stands alongside his great Quarry behind Pavis' Hill. Worshippers may visit Pavis' Palace from there.
Other Connections: All Flintnail worshippers are accepted or tolerated by the other friends of Pavis' cult and the city. Uniquely for a dwarf group, the cult members practice tolerance for elves, in deference to Pavis' mixed heritage.
Disadvantages: Flintnail's affinity works only within or adjacent to the Great Walls of the Old City (including inside New Pavis). The Cult has no power or influence outside the city.
