Artists Wanted
Issaries is seeking artists to illustrate upcoming products. If you
are a professional artist, send us samples (preferably from the list below,
plus your existing portfolio), rates, and references to your published
work. If you are an artistically inclined fan, amateur artist, or aspiring
professional, and looking to get a start in the field by having your work
included in professional publications, on an unpaid bases, look at the terms below.
Portfolio Contributions to Issaries, Inc.
Terms
Your submission is given to Issaries, Inc. (ISSARIES) at no cost, with all rights granted for
printed and online use, such use entirely at the discretion of Issaries, Inc. ISSARIES makes
no promise or guarantee to publish submissions, but shall return such rights to the artists
promptly if no plans to use it exist. Notification of return of rights shall be made by email
or letter at ISSARIES' option. Payment for any art used in printed publication shall be a copy
of any publication in which it appears.
Art Portfolio
For your work to be considered for publication, you need to submit a mini-portfolio based on a
list of subjects provided by ISSARIES. This list of subjects includes images that will appear
in the next Hero Wars supplements, and as the subject-at-large for the further series. As of
this date (August 01) we have text for three four scenario books that are all based on the war
of the Sartarites against the Lunar Empire. Each book will also have some assigned art, and your
submissions and acceptances here are weighed heavily to decide where assignments are made.
Images should be
emailed to us
for review.
Specifications
ISSARIES asks that you submit samples drawings indicated below using the following specifications:
- We are looking for black and white line drawings.
- Size as needed, keeping in mind that 3.5" width by 4.5" height is a quarter page in our new
format. Files can be zipped, but notify us in advance if you are using a Macintosh and want to
compress the files using Stuffit or another Mac-based program.
- We prefer images sent in electronic format (TIF file, 300 dpi, 100% scan).
- Check available resources for established models, BUT ...
- Do not stick slavishly to previous models. In particular, do not attempt to mimic a given style
used by someone else.
- Incorporate appropriate runes when possible. Specifically, use individual deity runes (see
Thunder Rebels and Storm Tribe for examples), not just the old
standard ones. If you do not have a rune, ask us for it.
Sample Portfolio Images
Sartarite Barbarian, armed for war
Warrior, housethane, weaponcarl, who cares? We want a guy (or woman) that looks interesting and
capable, perhaps in a menacing or combative pose. Remember that equipment is all hand-made and
inevitably differs in detail from what you have seen in a picture. Most people will have some
mismatched part on them.
Sartarite Hero, in his Hero Light
When a warrior is all pumped up with his magic he is said to be in his "hero light." The magic
has visual effects of many types (light, rays, fiery, glowing, oversized, etc.). Weapons and
armor may even look alien.
A Threatening Lunar Soldier
Take a look at the art available in Thunder Rebels and
online. Use some of them as models or,
better yet, someone similar to them but with some original feature, weaponry, etc. We want to
maintain something of a classical look, but keep in mind that this is NOT Greece or Rome, it is
a fantasy land.
A Lunar Person, not armored
Someone who is wearing something that might once have been a roman toga. Toga length is a measure
of social standing, with slaves having miniskirts, citizens knee length, and the upper class and
wealthy full length. Make the individual's profession apparent from the picture, or just make
noble person. Disdain is a common expression among them in these books.
Cameos/Portraits
Head and neck thumbnail sketches for either Sartarite barbarians, notable by their beards among
men; or Lunars, who have hats. I need mostly men. These will appear next to the person's stats.
You make the picture, I'll figure out who is who. We need at least fifteen of these, and will
need more as the series continues. See the various illustrations of rebel leaders in Thunder
Rebels for some ideas.
A Threatening Storm, Cloud etc.
Lots of storms in this and later books. Can you make it look interesting?
A Domestic Animal
Choose one, check the sources (again, especially Thunder Rebels and
Storm Tribe), and make this
one a supernatural or at least superior version of the critter. If you wish, for comparison, have
a normal version of the creature too: a cow and a super bull, etc.
A Weapon or Similar Item
We always need this kind of neutral art filler. An interesting weapon, magic item, tool, or
something similar.
Other Filler
Are you familiar with Glorantha? If so, something more generic is possible too. Send a picture of
something Gloranthan that is not found elsewhere, or of some place, thing, or person you know about
that has not yet been drawn (or perhaps has not been drawn properly).
